Second Hand Smoke is More Dangerous Than Smoking

Secondhand smoking is more dangerous than main smoking. It creates more serious health hazards. It is very dangerous to children, pregnant women, older people and people with heart or breathing problems.

Almost everywhere we find the written warning, “Smoking is injurious to health.” In spite of this warning, the health hazards as a result of smoking and secondhand smoking are on the increase and are threatening the modern world in various ways. Thanks to the efforts of voluntary organizations and governments endeavors of which have checked much of the evil effects of smoking. Cancer in various disguises has become the threatening monster of the modern world in spite of all the efforts to fights it out.

Secondhand smoke

Secondhand smoke is known as environmental tobacco smoke, involuntary smoking, and passive smoke. The most dangerous outcome of smoking is the serious consequences that occur by passive smoking. Persons affected by smoking need not be smokers themselves. Even those who are around the smoking persons fall victims of smoke. The combination of smoke that comes from the burning end of a cigarette, cigar or pipe or any other means of smoking and the smoke exhaled by a smoker is called secondhand smoke .

Secondhand more dangerous than smoking

This secondhand smoke is more dangerous than the main smoking because it contains more than 50 substances that can cause cancer and other hazards through passive smoking. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds most of which are known or suspected to cause cancer. Exposure to secondhand smoke causes health problems which include lung cancer, nasal sinus cancer, respiratory tract infections and also heart diseases. 

Who are affected by secondhand smoke?

Since the secondhand smoke has higher concentrations of cancer-causing agents called carcinogens than the main smoke from the smoker, it is very dangerous to children, pregnant women, older people and people with heart or breathing problems.

Dangerous health hazards of secondhand smoking

1) It is estimated that in US alone about 46,000 deaths occur from heart disease in non-smokers who live with smokers and about 3,400 lung cancer deaths in non-smoking adults.

2) As per reports from the US Environmental Protection Agency 50,000 to 300,000 lung infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis in children younger than 18 months of age, occur annually in the U.S.

3) Pregnant women exposed to secondhand smoke are also at increased risk of having low birth- weight babies and they are exposed to hazards linked to breast cancer.

4) Reports from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services state that two of every three kids between the ages of 3 and 11 are exposed to secondhand smoke in the U.S. and 20% children of aged between 9 and 17 have been diagnosed with some kind of mental or addictive disorder.
